What Camera Can I Use?

You can use your own digital video camera – perhaps the one that is on your phone. Many have very high quality cameras these days and are perfectly suited.

**PLEASE NOTE** If you are using the camera on your phone, please make sure you film landscape!

If you don’t have access to a video camera then we are able to lend you one for the duration of your film making.

The cameras we provide are loan cameras and you may keep them as long as you are filming, when you stop filming and feel like you want to move on then you can arrange for the camera to be left on the ward were you had your treatment and we will pick it up or post it back to us (JTV Cancer Support, 508 – 510 Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, S36 2DU).

Get Permission

PLEASE remember if you are filming other people to make sure you have their permission to be on camera.

This can be a verbal permission – if possible film them stating the fact.

Background Information

It’s a good idea to give some background information, who you are, diagnosis, age at diagnosis, the hospital you are/were treated at.

Are you having chemo, having maintenance or are you post-treatment?

Film everything and anything, think of it as a snap shot of what your life is, if you’re out and about, let the camera see what you are doing.

Filming dos and don’ts

  • If you are filming on your phone, please make sure the your phone is landscape.
  • Don’t film yourself in front of a window; the light can affect the quality of the film and we won’t be able to see you properly.
  • Don’t film in noisy environments. If you are forced to do so get a shot of at least 10 seconds of the noise source (e.g. washing machine, traffic, etc.). We use this during the editing process.
  • If you’re filming yourself and speaking try and put the camera no more than an arm’s length away. The further away the camera is, the harder it is to pick up sound and to pick up the image.

Who edits my film?

The majority of the films are edited by Peter Wilkinson. Occasionally films are edited by Mark Wilkinson and Lucie Carrington. You can be as involved in the process as you like, offering feedback on the edit. Of course, you are free to edit your own film. We’re happy to offer advice.

What happens to my footage?

The footage you send to us is viewed by our editor(s) which is then edited into a final film, or series of films. This can be done with your advice and input to make sure you’re happy with your film.

We securely store all of the footage that we receive regardless whether it makes the final film.
